After looking at some of the reviews online I think I favour the
Western Digital MyBook range. Is it possible to run these connected to
the USB on an Airport Extreme?

I've partitioned my external drive and use both (Time Machine and Carbon
Copy Cloner). I only do the Carbon Copy clones every couple of months;
it may be a bit OTT but I find it reassuring to be able to quickly boot
from the external drive should a major problem occur at the wrong
moment.

Why not every night, if the drive is mounted anyway?

It was a western digital. I just happened to be in PCWorld (there is one
over the road from my work) and they had a 1TB firewire, it was the
first time I had seen one under 100 so I got it.
It seems a good choice, it is quiet and tucks round the back of the
iMac, giving me a firewire passthrough connector.
