From: Steve on 22 Mar 2010 09:14 Does anyone have any recommendations for an external backup drive? I'd like something fairly cheap, quiet in operation. I think my plan would be to use SuperDuper! rather than Time Machine, but that's based on prejudice rather than any real knowledge. The aim would be to have an overnight bootable backup created automatically. My current backup strategy works but could be improved. Cheers, Steve

Any cheap USB drive should do, as speed is irrelevant for your purpose. They're all reasonably quiet nowadays. > I think my plan would be to use SuperDuper! rather than Time Machine, > but that's based on prejudice rather than any real knowledge. They are entirely different solutions, with different aims. > The aim > would be to have an overnight bootable backup created automatically. SuperDuper is just the tool for that. It means that means you lose everything older than a day though. For some purposes that's an advantage, Jan

I just picked up a cheap 1TB external firewire for 90 last year, turned on time machine and now have a set of backups from then -- Woody

The only downside I can think of is that a full clone of a large (and aren't they all, nowadays?) boot disk is going to take a while. Would a faster rpm drive make a noticeable difference, if it was only attached via USB? -- Chris

I'm using SuperDuper to backup a 200GB partition and it takes about 13 minutes for a typical day's activity (just backing up what's changed). I've switched from using Time Machine as I've always had a full bootable copy before on other machines and didn't realise TM didn't do that... E. |
