With a Macbook that sits a lot on a desk near electricity supply,
is it OK for the battery, for the mains supply cable to be
constantly attached and therefore to have the battery fully
charged nearly all the time? In some batteries, like mobile
phones and cameras I am sure I read that it is best for the
batteries to be discharged when stored and so I wonder about
this? By contrast, car batteries go downhill fast when stored
discharged.

it's not a big deal. apple suggests calibrating it every month but i
think that's a bit much. use it normally and don't worry about it.
every so often do a calibration.

for lithium batteries, half-charged and disconnected is ideal.
