From: Rudy on 15 Jan 2010 09:18 I'm running Win 2000 Pro with an athlon XP3200/400, Asus Mobo, 2 gig of ram and a Quadro FX 3600 video card. It's about four years old now. Every once in a while I get the bsod saying it made a memory dump and the computer was shut down. It doesn't give a stop eror. When I reboot, it sometimes hangs at the point where it detects the IDE drives. If I jostle the machine with a smack it reboots into windows. It sounds like somethings loose somewhere. Maybe in the HDD? I took it apart and blew it all out and re -seated cables and such. The bsod will show up when nothing is going on, the computer is just sitting there. Thanks for any ideas. Rudy

If something is loose, something like that won't tighten it. Did you try reseating the video card, the ram, things like that? You said "cables and such" but I am not sure what you mean by that.

When you re-seated 'cables and such' did you re-seat the RAM and cards as well (as another poster suggested)? If so, it sounds like a HD beginning to fail. Run scan disk on the HD (the complete scan, not the quick one) and if there are any bad clusters you need a new one. Also, d/l a HD check utility from the manufacturer and run it. If the HD checks out ok it's another component or software.

But that is unnecessary, if you can get the BSOD screen to stand still. In Windows, there is an option to not immediately reboot when a BSOD happens. If you use that, then you can take your time recording the details of the BSOD. Control Panels:System:Advanced:Startup and Recovery:untick Automatically restart You can test the hardware in your computer. Memtest86+ has several options for the media it can be installed on, and it tests all your memory. Run it for a couple complete passes of the Pass counter. No errors are acceptable in here, if you see any. This test would run forever, until you press <esc> and make the computer reboot into regular Windows. http://www.memtest.org/ If you have a popular brand name hard drive, then if you go to the hard drive maker's web site, they have diagnostic software. For example, I have Seagate drives, and I use "Seatools for DOS" to test them. Maybe by doing a bit of testing, as well as writing down your future BSODs, you'll get a better handle on the problem. In particular, the names of any drivers identified in the BSOD, may help point to things like a failing video card. Paul
