Only VirtualPC by Microsoft. I think v7 was the last release.

Well worth a look, and I followed it up at once.

Firstly, my main application (Card Studio 2009, by Hallmark) was listed
as Untested.

Nevertheless I went ahead and got a trial copy of CrossOver, set it up
and popped my install DVD in the slot. After a fair bit of fluffing
around I got the install screen for Card Studio and went ahead.

Installation took a good deal of time on the PC and was no faster on the
iMac. Around half ah hour later, I came to the end and clicked Finish.

I immediately got a notice saying that Card Studion needed Microsoft
..net Framework to run, and this was downloaded (300MB). Install began,
but no more that 20% through it reported an error - a file it couldn't
find IIRC - and exited.

I was left with an icon for Card Studio in the CrossOver environment. I
can launch it but nothing happens, and I can quit it :-(

A companion application, bundled in with Card Studio, works perfectly.

I've reported my problem but looking at the CrossOver site I've very
little expectation that they will be able to help - they will provide
support for problems with appications in their list but not for untested
ones unless there is a lot of demand.

My main worry now is, if this happens in CrossOver, what are my chances
of it happening in a full Windows 7 emulation in Parallels, Fusion or
what have you AFTER I've laid out my hard-earned on System 7?

John.

The two are not comparable.

WINE (the underlying tech behind Crossover) is a Windows replacement
framework - it supplies most of the OS calls that a Windows program
makes, translating them to OSX functions. Often this breaks -
particularly when (like here) the application wants another 300meg of
MS runtime libraries that may or may not work fully under WINE...

Whereas, Parallels/Fusion/VirtualBox are a virtual PC environment that
runs *actual* Windows, little different from how you would on a
physical peecee.

In other words, the VM solution is going to work as well as it would
on a real PC.

(I still greatly recommend using an old XP - or even win2k - license
instead of Win7, though - Win7 may be a better OS, but you're only
doing this because you want to run the apps, so the simpler the OS the
better)

Thanks for that reassurance!

I agree that I might just as well get an old XP full install set if I
can - we were running Card Studio on XP perfectly well on the wicows PC.

I will have to look on eBay or somesuch for a suitable copy, and take it
from there. And probably try it with VirtualBox for starters.

I'd like to add another +1 to the Virtualbox list (both on OSX and
Linux).

I've just installed the Garmin Mapsource utility to talk to my USB GPS
under XP on Virtualbox and it worked fine.
