In principle you are right Steve. But I see a lot of postings coming
from your forum where people are just advised about being on the wrong
forum instead of being helped. That must be quite frustrating for an
inexperienced forum OP who has enough troubles already. If you guys are
so picky about posting on the exact forum, why don't the mods just move
the posting and advise the OP accordingly - but playing wise guy does
not really help - I think. On our forum (Windows Vista Forum) we are a
lot more relaxed in that regard.

It can be, but I tell them where if I know of an appropriate place.

This really isn't a forum, it's a newsgroup, and posts are not easily
moved, nor are there any moderators to do it.

Not everyone can be an expert in everything. This group is about Microsoft's
Virtual PC product - post a question in here about that, and you'll get lots
of excellent responses.

However, think for a minute. Why would anyone want to post a question in
here which *didn't* relate to Microsoft Virtual PC? The name of the
newsgroup could hardly be any clearer.

Mods? Do you mean moderators? If so, this newsgroup, like all Microsoft's
public technology newsgroups, is completely unmoderatred.

- but playing wise guy does not really help - I think.

Seriously? You consider that telling someone they're posting in the wrong
newsgroup and advising them to post in one which is dedicated to the problem
that they're having makes someone a "wise guy"...? When you post in the
correct newsgroup, you will typically get far better and much quicker
responses to your question. Surely advising someone to do that is being as
helpful as someone who isn't an expert on the question being asked can be...

Wow! You know everything in the Windows Vista Forum, do you? That's
impressive!

Not everybody knows everything, but most everybody sees all the posts
and picks up on those that he/she thinks they can answer. So as a group,
we probably know quite a lot.
But that aside, I can now see your predicament. If you are not working
in a "managed" forum with mods and admins, I guess everybody becomes a
moderator.
We do have subforums too, but we are not too beastly about crossing the
lines. We usually only intervene if someone highjacks a thread and
recommend they start their own thread so that topics don't get mixed up.

Nobody was beastly to the OP - quite the reverse!

As stated, advising the OP to post in a more appropriate newsgroup because
their question bore no relevance whatsoever to the subject matter of this
newsgroup was done in the genuine hope that they would get faster and better
responses to their question by asking it in a place frequented by people who
are far more likely to be able to help...

If you had a question, say, about C#, would you not post it in the csharp
newsgroup...?
