From: DJW on 20 Mar 2010 10:46 I have a blue & white G3 running OS 10.3 with an external ATA drive hooked up. I went to install OS 10.3 on it while it was hooked up to USB. It said I could not do the installation because I would not be able to boot from it. I looked at the specs for the tower and found that the B & W tower can not boot from an external device via USB. OK well it also has a firewire connection. I un-mounted the drive and unplugged the USB and hot plugged in the firewire. After the drive mounted I was able to do the OS installation. At the end of the install it automatically wants to restart and go from booting from the installer CD to the newly installed system on the drive. When that happened it showed a folder icon with a system icon on it and then flashed a question mark like it could not find a system on that hard drive. It finally booted from my hard drive or maybe it was the CD do not remember. Well I finally got back to my master HD and the OS 10.3 I use most days and went to startup disk. The external HD showed with the newly installed system. I selected it and then restarted. The same thing happened. How can I get it to boot? Why might this be happening? I am connected to the computers internal firewire not a PCI card.
