Much as I distrust Google, the Chrome browser has become too hot to ignore.

There appear to be two antidotes to the official prying Google Chrome

1- SWIron Browser (a safe Chrome clone)
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

or

2- Unchrome.exe (a Google Chrome anonymiser)
http://www.abelssoft.net/ (unchrome.exe)

Has anyone considered either of these options? Which one did you choose?

I use Iron quite a bit. The version revisions are not so well kept up
with, but it is reasonably up-to-date. It doesnt switch search engines
very easily, but importing data from Firefox or IE is a snap--other
browsers should take note. It is very stable & pretty quick.Does a
decent job on cookies. Not a big learning curve.

I assume problems with the adblocker & download helper are the same as
in the Unchrome clone.Or Chrome itself.

Unchrome.exe is not a browser itself. It is something you run to render
normal Chrome installation 'harmless'

From the abelssoft site:

"Do you use the new Google Chrome web browser? If so, then you should
use this free tool. Each Google Chrome installation unfortunately
contains a unique ID which allows identification of its user. UnChrome
replaces your unique ID with Null values so your browser cannot be
identified any longer, and you can regain your privacy. "

I've been using Iron for several months now.

It hasn't replaced FFox as the main browser, mostly because I don't see
any compelling need. It is stable & fast whenever I've run it on Linux
or Win7. Something that might be useful to you is to do a feature
comparison of the two.

It appears that unchrome removes/masks/whatever the uuid. Iron has a
number of other features...

SRWare Iron, not SWIron.

Unchrome is no longer required. Google's latest version (or maybe a
version back) already removes the unique (client) ID string, if present,
and doesn't include it (leave it behind) for new installs. So Unchrome
is no longer required or applicable. Toss it.

SRWare Iron addresses other security concerns with Chrome than just the
old client ID issue. SRWare Iron is based on Chromium, not Chrome
(which is Google's version of Chromium). For example:

http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_faq.php
Q: I read about tools, which try to anonymize Chrome. Why not use these?
A: Right, there are tools, which try to do the same than Iron. But these
don't work with the sourcecode and so they only provide a limited
control. E.g. they can't disbale functions like th URL-Tracker.

Some other concerns are listed at:

http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php

I haven't bothered to trial SRWare Iron to see if it addresses the very
rude behavior of Chrome in installing it under your %userprofile% folder
to circumvent account permissions rather than under %programfiles% where
programs belong (or under some other program-permissioned path). If
SRWare Iron does the same thing, it won't get installed on my hosts.

Since I haven't trialed SRWare Iron, I don't know if it supports the
extensions (https://chrome.google.com/extensions) that are now available
for Google's Chrome as of version 4. SRWare Iron has had massive code
changes to Chromium so it may not support extensions as with Google's
version of Chromium.

I don't know personally if SRWare Iron's modified code results in just
as fast a web browser as Google's Chrome. From the benchmark at:

http://www.tmsnetwork.org/blog/comparison-web-browsers-javascript-benchmark-scores

It looks just a tad slower but almost on par with Chrome but that's an
old benchmark. Tis a pity that SRWare's forums are still German: posts
are English but the phBB software is still showing German (i.e., there
is no /en/ or other language paths for forum translations).
