From: Rick Youngman on 16 Mar 2007 03:07 This may not be a new idea...... but I can't see any reason why it's not do-able , if it is a new idea. To simplify...... lets say, for this example I have a Sprint Cell phone ....... I have UNLIMITED FREE minutes after 9 PM for instance. I also have a Cell Phone "docking station" click here to see what I mean: http://www.phonelabs.com/prd05.asp can anybody tell me why I shouldn't be able to plug a docking station DIRECTLY into my "line in" connector on my modem ??? Acording to what I'm reading, the "docking station" is doing nothing more than monitoring the CELLS phones line..... and it ( the docking station ) simply plugs into your "landlines" phone jack .. NOT THE WALL JACK---the phones jack...... if the cell phone rings..... it would cause your existing "home phone" to ring ....... from there you could answer either handset.. the cell phone...or home phone ( or let your modem do it ) All of these docking stations say you can "cut the wire" of your landline phone service.....and just use any "home-phones hardware" ( like phones they sell at Kmart ) ....... and from there...... you can use the full size handset and any or all of the features your Kmart phone can do ( i.e. caller ID.. ANSWERING MACHINE... or all of the above. and I BELIEVE a MODEM. A home phones line is "spiked" with voltage to make it "ring".... I cant remember the exact volts... I think it's like 90 Volts...... as soon as the reciever goes off hook...... the i/o voltage drops to like 18 or something while you are talking....... when you hang up, the line voltage at rest is like 5 volts........ something like that A Modem pluged into MaBells lines does the voltage monitoring....... if someone calls, and your modem is on..... it detects the "voltage spike"... the modem interputs that as a "ring"......and tells yer computer to answer the damn phone !!!!!..... if your calling out, it transmits the 18 volts to emulate the handset being picked up, and recieves a dial-tone for its efforts. These "docking stations", seem ..... to be doing the same thing with a cells phones ring detect and transmit and off hook signals........ they appear to be nothing more than "smart modems"...... only instead of monitoring Mabells phone line...they are monitoring your cell phones wireless line....... and if yer cell phone goes off hook... they tranfer the signals into the correct voltages that ANY LANDLINE device uses. So....... if this docking station is doing NOTHING MORE than "emulating" the signal your home phone (or modem) "expects" to recieve to function....... why shouldn't you be able to plug a docking stations "line out" DIRECTLY into your modems "linein" The docking stations seem to be just a relay node....... If I want to use my full sized handset (or modem) to MAKE or TAKE a call , I simply pick up my full sized phone ( or modem), and dial as always....and my cell phone, simply, acts a relay to the airwaves.... instead of MaBells copper wiring. So........ in therory ...... I "should" ........ beable to plug my modems line into the docking station.... run CCGMS or any terminal program.....and hit "dial"....... and my CELL phone will serve as "connector".... go off hook, and dial the number, and then just act like anyother wireless connection........ We all know that "line noise" is like a curse to dial-up connections.....especially at low BPS rates..... and lets get real....... cell phones have static....... ESPECIALLY if the batterys are low ......... but the nice thing about the docking stations, is they are also a re-charger base....... so I don't think that would be a problem. Unfortunantly..... my cell phone plan, is a pay as you go....... so I'm not going to try this "yet" ....... but Im SURE some of you out there have some sort of free minutes plan.......... wouldn't it be cool to call The Cottonwood BBs or any other C= BBs left FOR FREE on dial up again ???? with no long-D charges...for an small investment of a docking station ???? The one I refered to above is "middle of the road"...... after looking around a bit, a docking station can be had for as little a 50 bux. If anyone has tried this idea before....... or does......... please let us know if it works ...... or if you already have a docking station , and you feel brave, see if it works........ I'll be shopping for a docking station for my phone in the mean time....... and I'll be guinnie pig and try it out if no one has yet, and let ya know .......... I really can't see how any hardware could possible be damaged... Anyway....... thats the idea........ any input out there....... this is a disscussion group after all Rick Shameless plug follows: http://users.commspeed.net/wlbbs

Who knows what it'll do with the blaring tones of an ancient modem. But you're still using a phone connection, you need to connect to someone else's modem. It's not really gonna be "wifi".
