From: Reese on 16 Aug 2006 12:42 When I hit "new" (to create a new site) I don't have an "FTP" option.. only "Site" and "FTP and RDS Server" I went with the latter. But now I can't get any of the files there without using "open with". From: Alan on 16 Aug 2006 12:46 You're in the hard to sort out "site wizard" either click the "advanced" tab to get out of the nonsense, OR- inside the wizard, click the "Site" choice, NOT the "FTP and RDS Server" choice. > When I hit "new" (to create a new site) I don't have an "FTP" option.. only > "Site" and "FTP and RDS Server" > > I went with the latter. Wouldn't that limit me to downloading files in a very specific location? IE, the "local mirror image" of the remote folders? Can't DW be used like an FTP client? Where I can download files via FTP to any folder I want?
From: Alan on 16 Aug 2006 13:26 Yes- the "local site folder" is designed to be an exact mirror image of the remote site folder.... That's the concept of designing a website locally, and uploading it when ready. Dw works as an ftp client, but will only move files within a "site definition" moving files between what you've entered as the "local site folder" and the "remote server" If you want to move files at random, use an ftp client, not dreamweaver. If you want to make a website- use dreamweaver. Define a "site" as prev. stated. Put all site assets into the "local Site folder" (everything used in the site Must be in the local site folder. Period. that's why it makes no sense to download files to some other location. Original work files don't need to be in this folder, as they aren't final images "used" in the site) build the site use the Files Panel to upload the files. >> Your best bet is to do what Alan recommends and do a new site definition >> as a Site, not as an FTP Site. > > Wouldn't that limit me to downloading files in a very specific location? I know how to use DW to design websites :) I just find it a shame that I can't use it to substitute my FTP client. I mean, all the functionality is there. Add a "download to..." button to the FTP/RDS thing, and it would completely eliminate any need for CuteFTP or other such software. Thanks for the answers... |
