Wins the prize <fingers crossed>. He just came in from work and responded to my text. I accessed the Mac via Teamviewer and went into the CUPS config web panel (first time I'd ever seen that). He had actually gone in there himself from my text but wasn't sure what to do next and nor was I but .. I found that whist the std printer prefs panel said the driver was the 'Canon MX350 series' the CUPS panel didn't agree, and changing it there to the right value seemed to do the trick (as a 'stuck' test page started printing). I opened OO and printed from there as well. So, one happy mate and his Mrs and thanks to Sak and everyone else who offered help. Cheers, T i m
