From: T i m on 14 Jul 2010 10:49 Hi All, I'm trying to sort out a printer problem between an Apple laptop (10.5) and a (new) Canon printer (MX350). Looking on the Canon website there are two drivers for that model and 10.5: http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0037993.asp?model= and http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0038665.asp?model= Now I think we have the second one on there at the moment and whilst we have been able to get the printer to print a head alignment page via the utilities we can't get it to print via an app (Safari or OO etc). We can also connect to and configure the printer from the Mac (like changing from DHCP to static and the WiFi settings etc). Also the network scanning has worked ok from the beginning. So, assuming the actual connection to the printer is ok (other machines can print to it) and if we know the i/p address (if we set it statically), what would the correct step-by step process be for adding such a printer please? Is it LPD, TCP/IP, I'm pretty sure it's not a Windows printer (Samba I think is the third option)? How could we remove the stuff that came on the CD and start afresh with the downloaded stuff (assuming they might be more current etc) please? All the best, T i m

I dragged the Canon folder out of Apps and into the bin, hoping that is how you 'uninstall' something under OSX. Re-installed from the Canon CD, noting the steps as I went. Still nothing. From the Mac I can ping the printer, I can scan from the 'printer' I can run a head alignment and other maintenance and can access the web management but I can't get a simple app to print. ;-( At best it goes into the queue, says 'printing' but does nothing. It seems the installer CD installs a CUPS driver (10.30.?) driver and when this is selected (under LDP) the icon of the printer exactly matches the look of the actual printer. I downloaded the other 'non CUPS' driver, installed it but couldn't see a way to activate it? The guy is going to ring Canon today and see if they can offer any help and if not they said they would just not bother printing from the Mac (and that's a shame as the Mac was happily printing to the HP MFP the Canon replaced). (There were mention of the Gutenprint drivers when you selected drivers from the list but not for that model). Ho hum, T i m

Depends on the printer and what protocols it supports - it may support more than one. LPD if the printer supports LPD spooling; TCP/IP if the printer uses some proprietary protocol etc. You can browse to http://localhost:631 and configure CUPS directly.

I don't know anything about this printer, so you will have to look in its reference manual. A networked printer will generally support lpd or ipp or both, but it's entirely possible for it to use some proprietary protocol (it'd be somewhat perverse, but possible). > We did also look at the settings on the printer yesterday (via it's > own panel) and Bonjour and LDP (and LLPD or some such?) If it supports Bonjour, then it should just show up in the systems prefs for printers/fax and auto-configure.

Whilst it could be something perverse under Windows as it's installer did it all for us but I'm not sure that would have applied to Ubuntu as well just did the 'Add printer' thing as normal (it doesn't preclude the perversity still in the driver of course). ;-) > > >> We did also look at the settings on the printer yesterday (via it's >> own panel) and Bonjour and LDP (and LLPD or some such?) > >If it supports Bonjour, then it should just show up in the systems >prefs for printers/fax and auto-configure. It does support Bonjour (well, it's in the on screen settings and can be enabled / disabled). Well maybe it did (or found it when we gave it the ip address), and from there does all the utility things (via Canons network addon), it just won't print and ranges from saying 'Printing' next to a job in the queue to "Error, trying in 10 seconds' to just sitting there. Cheers, T i m
