From: kobiianardo on 8 Apr 2010 19:31 Hello, we're getting rid of and switching from a computer with server 2003 SBS to become a workgroup of 15 or so people. it happens that the server is also our DHCP server (and i think it also handles our DNS). How do i modify the following processes so it would actually work out fine? plan a: copy all the data we need from the old computer -> while the old server is still running -> get people out of the domain and join the workgroup -> buy and hookup a router -> throw away old computer. plan b: copy -> throw away computer -> hook up router -> make everyone join workgroup plan c: blank i dont know if the physical setup of our computers matter. we have 2-3 switches, 3-4 wired/wireless routers, 2 printers and maybe 20 computers. and also are there particular types of routers i should get? thanks kobiianardo p.s. thanks for people that helped out in my other thread.
From: Meinolf Weber [MVP-DS] on 9 Apr 2010 01:45 Hello kobiianardo, If you will use only the workgroup, it doesn't matter which way you choose to make the machines workgroup computers. As long as you have the local administrator password you can also bring them to workgroup without the domain. Don't forget to prepare local user accounts on all computer and copy data into a separate machine folder, as the domain user account profile wan't be accessible for normal user accounts. SBS handles also DNS as this is a major need for a domain. SBS 2003 can easily handle 15, and is capable of 75. I can't imagine anyone wanting to move to a "Workgroup" after having a quality and properly built domain setup. -- You can't trust your best friends, your five senses, only the little voice inside you that most civilians don't even hear -- Listen to that. I can't imagine > anyone wanting to move to a "Workgroup" after having a quality and > properly built domain setup. Exactly. Although I have been to a doctor's office where they have no IT people and the people there just cannot comprehend a "domain". I gave them a Domain on the single server, but was forced to let them keep logging in to the workstations *locally* with a generic account for the whole machine (no per-user accounts). So the workstations are members, but beyond that the Domain is unused. I had to just "give up" and leave it that way. They still "think" in terms of Windows 95/98 where there is a single profile for all users. The idea of different profiles (desktop, favorites, My Docs) for each user was too much for them. Then having someone adding/deleting user accounts, adjusting permissions, as a result of employee turn-over,...just too much. Yea, there were some other methods that could have been explorered, but it reached a point where I just wanted free of the whole thing. I already have a full time job, I was not a consultant "officially" at the time, and did not have a "business" as a consultant, and was not interested in being self-employed on top of my full time job. I was just someone they knew and was asked if I could help. Haven't heard anything from them in a long time. Maybe they finally hired an actual consultant to help them on a regular, planned, structured, paid basis (I'm hoping). -- Phillip Windell The views expressed, are my own and not those of my employer, or Microsoft, or anyone else associated with me, including my cats. ----------------------------------------------------- |
