From: Miles Li [MSFT] on 30 Jul 2008 06:42 Hi PaulS, Please send the mail to v-mileli(a)microsoft.com. I am sorry about the inconvenience. So the DHCP request packets are sent from the clients and the SBS server never receive it. It seems that the Cisco Catalyst 500 drops them. To understand your network environment, as I mentioned in my last post, could you please explain the connect type of the SBS domain? Is it a 2 NICs scenario like: Internet-------------SBS 2003 server-------------Cisco Catalyst 500-------------Clients Is there any policy on the Cisco Catalyst 500 (or VLAN) that may prevent the clients' broadcast DHCP packets? You may have a try to directly connect a laptop to the internal NIC of the SBS server. Will it get the IP address leased properly? Internet-------------SBS 2003 server-------------laptop Best regards, Miles Li Microsoft Online Partner Support Microsoft Global Technical Support Center Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security ===================================================== When responding to posts, please "Reply to Group" via your newsreader so that others may learn and benefit from your issue. ===================================================== This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
From: Miles Li [MSFT] on 31 Jul 2008 06:42 Reply from Puals: ========================================= BTW It is a single NIC server and the network is: Cisco 878 (SHDSL modem/router)-------------Cisco Catalyst 500 24 port-------------Clients and SBS 2003 There are no VLANs configured, although Smartport roles are: Server port setup as Server, the printer ports are setup as Printer and the PC ports are setup as Desktop. Server is a Dell 2900, PCs are Dell Optiplex, printers are OKI, Brother and HP. None get DHCP. I guess I can try taking in a standard switch and plug in a PC to see if the Cisco is at fault. Weird thing is that it worked for about 2 months, then suddenly stopped. As far as I can determine nothing has been changed on the network. The server listens on 68 but just never picks anything up, so of course I need to find where it's getting waylaid. The switch is about the last thing. As I said I did think it might have been an update to XP, but the printers can't get addresses either. I didn't know at the time as I had set them up as static anyway, but one lost it's configuration and I tried to get back in with DHCP but it just got nowhere. Brought it back to my office and plugged it in and suddenly it worked, so it's got to be the network there. ========================================= Best regards, Miles Li Microsoft Online Partner Support Microsoft Global Technical Support Center Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security ===================================================== When responding to posts, please "Reply to Group" via your newsreader so that others may learn and benefit from your issue. ===================================================== This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
From: Miles Li [MSFT] on 31 Jul 2008 07:38 Hi PaulS, The BindToDHCPServer with value of 1 indicates this interface binds to the DHCP server. Even though a interface without the BindToDHCPServer registry key will binds to the DHCP server by default, it is recommended that you restore the key with value of 1. I look into the Network trace log and confirm the server never receive any DHCP request packets from the clients. Please have try to replace a switch even plugging a client directly to the SBS server with the cross over cable. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. From: PaulS on 5 Aug 2008 22:17 Hi Miles, It turned out that someone (no hands were raised!) decided to move cables around in the switch and the server was plugged into a port with the SmartPort role of Desktop instead of the one I had it in which I had assigned a SmartPort role of Server. The switch was filtering out DHCP as a desktop shouldn't be a DHCP server. Once I replaced the cables as they should be all works fine. Thanks for your help. Cheers, PaulS
