A failed update can't "fry" your hard drive, and it can't keep your computer from booting from CD. Only hardware failure can do that. Set the BIOS boot order to boot from the CD drive and put your XP disk in the drive and reboot the machine. When you see "press any key to boot from CD" press any key.
