From: Scott S on 18 May 2010 11:46 this is Win 7 64bit. No the trial period had not expired. Q: When did this behavior start, before you installed the McAfee free trial, > while the McAfee free trial was installed, or after you'd installed the > Norton/Comcast freebie? A: the norton installer, uninstalled McAffee then installed itself. it seems to be after this action when the trouble started. one of the steps i took after the problem began, was downloading from the mcaffee website the remover program, and running it. it completed successfully and restarted my system. > Did you run the "McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool" (and not another > tool of any other name) before you installed the Norton/Comcast freebie? From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 18 May 2010 12:15 Did you upgrade from the preinstalled McAfee free trial to Comcast's McAfee freebie (i.e., McAfee Security Center) and then to the Norton freebie (i.e., Norton Security Suite)? See this related page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1655 What you'll need to do, in short, is... 1. Download the McAfee and Norton removal tools, saving each one to your desktop: Norton Removal Tool ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe 2. Uninstall the Norton freebie (including LiveUpdate) & reboot; 3. Run the Norton Removal Tool & reboot; 4. Run the McAfee removal tool & reboot; 5. Reinstall the Norton freebie (or better yet, install Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx). 6. Reset Windows Update How do I reset Windows Update components? [Ignore the APPLIES TO section if Win7; Access KB971058 via Internet Explorer (32-bit) only; Run the Fix It in Default and Aggressive modes] http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 7. Reboot & test. If you need further assistance, you can open a chat support session via http://www.norton.com/comcast_chat or call 1-877-272-7149 to speak to a live Norton technician. From: Scott S on 19 May 2010 10:40 I have removed both AV programs, using both uninstallers provided. With both uninstalled and firewall turned off, windows update will not function properly. Added note. I used fix it (MicrosoftFixit50202) after to repair windows update. it was not able to terminate WU or Bits. i switched them both to manual start, rebooted then ran it again and it completed fine, but still no update. i dont have any indication that either AV program is the culprit.
