From: ron on 25 Nov 2009 13:52 Following Bill's suggestion I was able to ascertain that I do have ServicePack3 installed, so I should be OK for larger drives? Seems like Hitachi no longer makes laptop IDE drives and the only other manufacturer I could find was Samsung and it had worse reviews than the WDs. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and getting the WD 320G. Is there any reason to believe that the 250G or 160G Western Digitals might be more robust because of smaller capacity? Ron
From: Barry Watzman on 25 Nov 2009 17:10 As I noted earlier, there are 3 requirements for 48-bit lba support. The OS is only one of those 3; you still need the other two. However, I think that you are probably ok with the model that you have. ron wrote: > Following Bill's suggestion I was able to ascertain that I do have > ServicePack3 installed, so I should be OK for larger drives? > > Seems like Hitachi no longer makes laptop IDE drives and the only > other manufacturer I could find was Samsung and it had worse reviews > than the WDs. > > I'm thinking of biting the bullet and getting the WD 320G. As I said, my 320G works ok, and as you noticed, the choice in IDE drives is fairly limited that days ... -- John Doue

Also (at least here in New Zealand) Samsung laptop HDDs only have a 1 year warranty while Western Digital still have a 3 year warranty. -- Shaun. "Give a man a fire and he's warm for the day.
