Yep. That's what I was trying to say. Sorry for having omitted
necessary steps.

Cheers,

I've seen that in several apps and I suspect it's a bug or inefficiency
in a system library. When Time Machine is running over the Internet,
Dictionary sometimes puts up the beachball for a minute. I've never
caught it in the act while I had 'fs_usage' logging I/O access.

OP back.

Activity Monitor "Open Files and Ports" was viewed directly after a
launch of Dictionary and it does not report any paths that include one
or both of the external drives even though both drives were busy as a
result of the launch of Dictionary.

Guess I'll just chalk it off to "possessed." ;)

Thanks to all for the info and suggestions.

Only a guess, but might it be looking for additional dictionaries?

OP back.

I've never had other dictionaries to my knowledge but then the memory is
far from perfect. ;)

Possibly this Apple Dictionary app does such a search as a normal
routine. If so, that may be it.

Thanks.
