No. On old operating systems, partitioning was often a good idea because it allowed more efficient use of space on very large drives. OS X uses a more efficient file system so partitioning no longer provides much (if any) improvement.

He didn't present any reasons for partitioning, just a possible scheme for deciding how many partitions and what gets stored on each. His original post asked whether anyone still partitions and what the pros & cons are, so I believe he wants help deciding whether he should do it.

Another reason it made sense earlier is that backup media were often smaller than the internal disk. Now, of course, it's easy to get a FW drive much larger than the internal. -- john mcwilliams
