Along these lines, another valid reason to partition is, when you have
multiple people who access the same stuff, to be able to turn off
permissions for that volume.

No.

On old operating systems, partitioning was often a good idea because it allowed
more efficient use of space on very large drives. OS X uses a more efficient
file system so partitioning no longer provides much (if any) improvement.

He didn't present any reasons for partitioning, just a possible scheme for
deciding how many partitions and what gets stored on each. His original post
asked whether anyone still partitions and what the pros & cons are, so I believe
he wants help deciding whether he should do it.

I'm in the non-partioning camp now, though I wasn't prior to OS X.
Another reason it made sense earlier is that backup media were often
smaller than the internal disk. Now, of course, it's easy to get a FW
drive much larger than the internal.

The reasons I did it:
1. I wanted Panther, Tiger, and Leopard to be in
separate partitions.

2. I wanted to put limits on children who had no restraint
when it came to music, images, and games.

3. I wanted one case-sensitive partition for compiling
code from the Linux world.

Change is inevitable. We need to learn that "inevitable" is
neither a synonym for "good" nor for "bad."
