What is your XP version and Service Pack? How did you determine that you have duplicate Windows updates and which updates do you think are duplicates? If you would supply a few more clues, you might get some better ideas!

XP home SP3 These are the duplicates : kb 983583 kb 982524 kb 979909 kb 982168 There are multiple ( 5-6 ) entries for all of these . TIA , D.
