From: Jon Doh on 1 Aug 2007 06:05 Good Morning, I've got a WSS 3.0 server running on Windows 2003 R2 (SP1), if a user subscripts to Alerts they correctly recieve an e-mail from the server informing them they have correctly setup an alert. However when adding a new user/changing document security settings, etc the user recieves and error stating that the operation completed successfully but the e-mail notification could not be sent. I've checked the Application Log and have the following errors each time an attempt is made to send an e-mail: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3 Event Category: E-Mail Event ID: 7946 Date: 01/08/2007 Time: 10:04:42 User: N/A Computer: BRI-SVR-APPS-1 Description: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Unfortunately checking the Knowledge Base and other on-line sources revels no information about this error. If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Joh
From: Ada Pan [MSFT] on 1 Aug 2007 22:56 Hello Joh, Based on my experience, this issue could be caused by different reasons. To narrow down this problem, please try the following steps: #1. Anti-Virus is filtering or removing the mail messages. In one of my cases, this issue was caused by McAfee AV was not configured correctly. Finally we resolved the problem by following the steps below: We checked the VirusScan console settings and they have the mass mailing blocked option set: Right click VirusScan (on task bar) -> Console -> Access Protection -> Port Blocking Tab -> Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail - 25 port number. - Uncheck this setting If this is not the case on your side, please go to the next troubleshooting steps: #2. Permissions on the SMTP VS - test via: 323350 How To Test SMTP Services Manually in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323350 #3. In the Reply-to address box, type the e-mail address to which you want e-mail recipients to reply. 6. In the Character set menu, select the character set that is appropriate for your language. 7. From: Jon Doh on 2 Aug 2007 05:46 Many thanks for your reply Ada, I've managed to solve the problem. We do have McAfee AV, however I've confirmed that the setting was correctly configured. The SMTP test worked successfully. In the SharePoint Outgoing E-mail settings i've changed the SMTP server from it's FQDN to it's IP address and the server is now successfully sending outgoing e-mails. Many thanks for your help.
