This is due to Windows (especially Windows 7) taking an extremely long time to do an initialization requested by the "OpenSSL" library used by Eudora. This can be fixed by a ONE BYTE patch to one program file (QCSSL.dll) found in the same folder as Eudora.exe: "How to patch QCSSL.dll to fix slow (or failed) first SSL" http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showpost.php?p=46361 Users of (the best) Eudora version 7.1 may just download the "zip" file attached to that post, which contains the already-patched file for version 7.1 An otherwise unknown user identified as "JCF" on Eudora's forums found this solution. --
From: ijones on 21 Jul 2010 09:12 Hi John, thanks a lot for your suggestion. Now my Eudora works in wonderful way. thanks >> In Eudora 7.1 I have 6 accounts and when I click on "check emails", >> Eudora immediately stops on third account for more than one minute, >> then Eudora downloads every emails regularly [thereafter] > >I think you may mean the "first-time use of SSL" delay, >which pauses for a while on the very first server connection >that happens to use SSL ("Secure Sockets"), >but works normally fast every time after that first delay. > >This is due to Windows (especially Windows 7) >taking an extremely long time to do an initialization >requested by the "OpenSSL" library used by Eudora. > >This can be fixed by a ONE BYTE patch to one program file >(QCSSL.dll) found in the same folder as Eudora.exe: > >"How to patch QCSSL.dll to fix slow (or failed) first SSL" >http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showpost.php?p=46361 > >Users of (the best) Eudora version 7.1 may just >download the "zip" file attached to that post, >which contains the already-patched file for version 7.1 > >An otherwise unknown user identified as "JCF" on Eudora's forums >found this solution.

You may verify that it's the same as the original QCSSL.dll (with only one byte changed) which comes with Eudora version 7.1, by performing the "fc/b" command that's described in the post: "How to patch QCSSL.dll to fix slow (or failed) first SSL" http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showpost.php?p=46361 Scroll to the end of the post to find downloadable file QCSSL.v71.zip Or you may "do it yourself," as described, using your own file, for Eudora versions which use OpenSSL and which initialize too slowly. The source code modification in OpenSSL is discussed earlier in that thread. Although Eudora's own source code is proprietary and unavailable, the "OpenSSL" source which was compiled into that module is "open source" and freely available, which is how unidentified forum participant "JCF" came to devise this solution, by uniquely locating a single compiled instruction to be changed, within the DLL file already compiled by Qualcomm. Pretty neat! --
