Next: VSS Errors in Event Log
From: Sergio Ricci on 26 Nov 2007 07:57 Hi, We have a Win2K3 SBS Premium SBS server that has for the past few weeks been having a few issues that primarily manifests itself as the server freezing for several minutes and then springing back to into life. During the freeze, users get the popup balloon telling them that Exchange is trying to retrieve data. Going through the logs Event ID: 7011 always seems to be recorded around the time the freeze happens. I've done some research into Event ID: 7011 and most suggest modifying the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters [REG_DWORD] autodisconnect: Original Value: 'f' New Current Value: 'fff' Making this change does appear to have improved matters but what is also worrying is that certain disk operations such as 'chkdsk' and 'defrag' cause the server to freeze resulting in the above log being written. I have downloaded an evaluation copy of Diskeeper 2008 Server to see if that also caused a reoccurance of the issue and it does. A bit about the server: OS: Win2K3 Premium (w/ ISA Server 2000) SBS Hardware: HP Proliant ML350 G4 Smart Array 641 Controller x3 72.8GB HDD (10K rpm) configured into x1 RAID5 logical drive x1 Intel Xeon 3.4GHz Processor 4GB of RAM Hardware diagnostics (using HP diag tools) show no issues. Changes Made so far: The following are the changes made (with results) made to the server so far in an attempt to resolve the issue: 1) Recreated NtFrs database (result = no improvement) 2) Ensured that NtFrs database was excluded from any virus scans 3) Removed Windows Defender from Server (no improvement) 4) Stopped SQL/ACT7 database instances from auto starting 5) Increased File Replication Service Timeout by modifying the registry value above from it's old value to it's new current value (appears to have improved things so far but only made the change late last week so still early days). NB: When I say thatit has 'improved things', it has improved things to the point that the server doesn't appear to hang as often during the day under normal use (before it would freeze 5 or more times a day, now we are currently down to 1 freeze in 2 days). However, if I run 'chkdsk' or try to do a 'defrag', it will still freeze for several minutes. The freeze also causes me to lose any network connection and affects the connection to the server via the remote management board. Any help or pointers in resolving the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thansk in advance. Sergio PS: Does Microsoft Professional Support no longer offer the email support option which cost, from memory, under 100 which was great if it wasn't urgent? I only seem to find the 'phone and email' support offering which costs 199+VAT
From: Claus on 26 Nov 2007 08:58 Sounds to me like a disk issue. Do you see a lot of bad sectors when you run diags? From: Sergio Ricci on 26 Nov 2007 09:46 Claus, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I also thought that the issue may be to do with failing HDD but that doesn't appear to be the case as diags show no physical problems on the disks at all (running 'chksdk', however, resulted in a couple of unused indexes being cleaned up). Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Sergio "Claus" <cjobes(a)nova-tech.org> wrote in message news:OpTdvSDMIHA.280(a)TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Sounds to me like a disk issue. From: Claus on 26 Nov 2007 10:02 What hardware are you using? I would check if the manufacturer has some testing tools for the HDs and the RAID controller. -- Claus "Sergio Ricci" <me(a)domainname.com> wrote in message news:uRifssDMIHA.1164(a)TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Claus, > > Thanks for taking the time to respond. > > I also thought that the issue may be to do with failing HDD but that > doesn't appear to be the case as diags show no physical problems on the > disks at all (running 'chksdk', however, resulted in a couple of unused > indexes being cleaned up). > > Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. > Sergio > > "Claus" <cjobes(a)nova-tech.org> wrote in message > news:OpTdvSDMIHA.280(a)TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> Sounds to me like a disk issue. From: Sergio Ricci on 26 Nov 2007 10:16 It's all HP hardware. I'll try some more diags this evening and post back any results. Thanks.
