A tape drive or external hard drive is probably more appropriate. Dave

Depending on the OP's data size, a Western Digital Passport might be sufficient. <URL:http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=701> However, if I needed an optical media writer for some other purpose, I would look very closely at Plextor. Their CD and DVD burners have been rock solid for me with cdrecord. <URL:http://www.plextor-digital.com/index.php/en/External-DVD+/-RW/> I've used Joerg Schilling's pxupdate to upgrade the firmware on Plextor SCSI and ATA drives under Solaris.
