Dear all,
What is the best(detectable, easy to use) external DVD-writer to carry
on a backup for data on many Solaris 10 stations?
Please provide me with a model and a vendor ?
Thanks in advance

I'm not aware of any, but a DVD writer is not going to be a lot of
help on a modern machine for backup purposes. A tape drive or external
hard drive is probably more appropriate.

Agreed.

Depending on the OP's data size, a Western Digital Passport
might be sufficient.

However, if I needed an optical media writer for some other purpose,
I would look very closely at Plextor. Their CD and DVD burners
have been rock solid for me with cdrecord.

I've used Joerg Schilling's pxupdate to upgrade the firmware on
Plextor SCSI and ATA drives under Solaris.

Is that USB external DVD supported with Solaris 10 and usable to burn
DVD ?

I see a few USB Plextor burners on the Solaris 10 HCL:

My guess is that Plextor's current burners will also work under
Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris.
