Not really. Keep both kernels installed and add the new kernel to the boot
menu. If for some reason the system will not boot with the new kernel, just
reboot and select the old one again. You might want to copy the configuration
file from the original kernel to the new kernel before configuration to make
the new kernel somewhat similar to that installed.
