From: kevin on 9 Jun 2010 08:52 I am looking to upgrade the security of a 10 user SBS 2003 advanced network with XP clients. I would like to reconfigure my network from a 2 nic to a 1 nic configuration and install a hardware solution to handle what my Trendmicro does now. I need RWW, AnitVirus and Spam filtering. I also need detection/ lockout, blacklisting (or a whitelist for remote access would be better). What hardware appliance is recomended by the group? Thanks Kevin
From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on 9 Jun 2010 09:21 Hello kevin, You will get lots of different opinions. If you move to a one nic config on the SBS you will certainly want something at the edge, and a consumer grade router is not enough, imo. After that, there are lots of options where you will have to decide on your specific requirements. One possible solution is MS AV on the stations, good and inexpensive, and one of the edge devices designed to filter spam, virus, and so on. There is quite a list, including, but not limited to Untangle, SonicWall, WatchGuard, Calyptix, Cisco and others. Each of these will have appliances designed for small, medium, and large user base, and some will allow you to challange users at the edge before you even are offered the change to sign on to RWW. Most all will do filtering at the edge. Further, you can, with Trend or lots of other services, have the email screened before it gets to your location for Virus and Spam, and with some of those services you can even create a white list of only the addresses/domains from which you will accept mail. Reflexion is one such. Lots of folks like Own Web Now, run by an MS Exchange MVP. - Larry Please post the resolution to your issue so others may benefit - Get Your SBS Health Check at www.sbsbpa.com > I am looking to upgrade the security of a 10 user SBS 2003 advanced > network with XP clients. > > I would like to reconfigure my network from a 2 nic to a 1 nic > configuration and install a hardware solution to handle what my > Trendmicro does now. > > I need RWW, AnitVirus and Spam filtering. From: kevin on 9 Jun 2010 09:53 Thanks for the quick reply Larry, I am looking at the Firebox X10e and the SonicWALL TZ 100. These boxes seem to handle 10 users OK. I was wondering how well the Spam/AV/Intrusion features stack up to the other solutions availible. Also, how easy they install. Thsanks Kevin
From: Cris Hanna [SBS - MVP] on 9 Jun 2010 10:04 As has already been pointed out, you'll get lots of opinions on Hardware Devices that can do UTM For whatever it's worth, many of the MVPs have become big fans of the Calyptix Access Enforcer Units. Does it mean that's the way you should go? Maybe. Maybe not...you really have to check them all out, compare side by side and then determine what makes the most sense in your case based on cost, what appears to be ease of setup and administration and so forth Leythos has been around this group a long time as well and is well respected and you should look at that option as well. -- Cris Hanna [SBS - MVP] (since 1997) Co-Contributor, Windows Small Business Server 2008 Unleashed http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Small-Business-Server-Unleashed/dp/0672329573/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217269967&sr=8-1 Owner, CPU Services, Belleville, IL A Microsoft Registered Partner ------------------------------------ MVPs do not work for Microsoft Please do not submit questions directly to me.
