Well this is not for myself, but for a friend. He had a very old PC which
had a copy of Word on it - not registered to himself but was a gift from a
company he retired from many years ago. Now he has bought a new PC which
already had MS Office (unregistered) already installed. The PC also had MS
Works installed. He is very reluctant to pay the price for Word when he
says that the WP in Works will do everything he needs to do. However he has
(perhaps) up to a couple of hundred Word files (he acts a
secretary/treasurer for a few charity orgs) which were created on his old PC
and would like very much to have them converted to Works.

He has considered purchasing/registering the version of Word on the new PC
but would prefer if possible to go down the other route. It's an issue of
cost.

My copy of MS Works 8.0 will open .doc files.

Yes, the Works app will open .doc files but the problem he has (it's for a
friend who is not just too comfortable with computers in general) somewhere
like 200 files to convert, so I thought a batch file converter would be the
answer.

Neil;

Not to take pleasure in your problems but this is a real interesting
issue overall. Please keep us in the loop on developments.

Not what you asked for, but alternative strategies to consider:

* Go to OO rather than M$O or Works. No conversion necessaary for the
old files.

* If he insists on Works, why batch convert at all? Convert them one
at a time as they are needed over time by loading the .doc into Works
and saving as .wps.

* You may be able to find a .doc to .rtf converter easier than onr
that converts to .wps, and Works can be set up as default program for
..rtf files.
