From: bruceguy on 6 Aug 2010 11:25 My MacBook Pro froze (running Snow Leopard - 10.6.4), and when I restarted it, the fonts seem to be doing strange stuff. In Safari, many sites are coming up in a bold font (looks like the old mac font Chicago). More seriously, Excel no longer recognizes Arial fonts, and when I make a new chart, titles and axis lables are all invisible. I'm pretty sure when I open up MS word docs, stuff is going to look weird. Anyone have suggestions on how to deal with it or what is happening? Thanks! Bruce

First, run Disk Utility to look for directory damage (unlikely, but possible). The easiest, second thing to do is use a utility like OnyX (there are others) and clean the fonts cache (Cleaning->Fonts). If that doesn't do it just zap all the caches. It can't hurt. There are some 'learned' responses which may be lost, but they are easily re-established. This routine is far easier than a reinstall, at least as as an early step. BTW, if clearing the caches works, send the developer a few bucks as a thank-you donation.
