From: Skylamar Jones on 6 Aug 2010 04:56 Hi. I have a lot of mailboxes for organizing my mail in Mail.app. A lot of the mailboxes I created a long time ago. A few of the folders are white. They contain other folders with mail. However, I can't remember how to create those white folders anymore. They aren't a regular Mailbox, Smart Mailbox or Smart Mailbox Folder, but I don't see any other options for creating a mailbox or folder. I'm guessing that the answer to my question is simple, I just can't figure it out. Thanks

How To Post Screen Shots To Newsgroups You can post a screenshot link using a service like ImageShack. ImageShack is an easy-to-use free media hosting service. It can be used to upload images. Registration is not required in order to upload files. 1. On your keyboard, press Command-Shift-4. 2. On your keyboard, press the space bar. 3. Click the window you want. A picture file will appear on the desktop. 4. Go to http://imageshack.us/. 5. Click Browse, then navigate to and select the picture file. 6. Click "start upload!". 7. Paste the "Direct link to image" URL in a newsgroup message. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts. JR

They represent nested folders and weren't created by me with Mail. The folders were already on the server when I set Mail up to access this account. -- Paul Goodman

I've just tested this with Mail 4.3 in Snow Leopard 10.6.4 to get an idea of the behaviour. I seem to recall earlier versions are the same. Mail has three distinct sorts of mailboxes or folders (ignoring smart mailboxes or smart mailbox folders). (a) Simple mailboxes containing messages. These have a blue folder icon. (b) Mailboxes which are also folders. They may contain messages and always contain at least one other mailbox or folder. These also have a blue folder icon, but have a reveal triangle control to the left, so you can expand them and see the folders/mailboxes inside them. (c) Folders which cannot contain messages but can contain other folders and mailboxes. These have a white icon and a reveal triangle control. They may be empty. You can create simple mailboxes (a) by clicking on the + icon at the bottom left corner of the Mail window and choosing New Mailbox (or using that command in the Mailbox menu). You can turn a simple mailbox (a) into a mailbox/folder (b) by dragging another mailbox (or folder) into it, and turn it back into a simple mailbox (a) by dragging all the mailboxes or folders inside it to a different location. You can turn a simple mailbox (a) or a mailbox/folder (b) into a white folder (c) by selecting it and using the Delete Mailbox command (which will delete anything that was in the mailbox and any contained mailboxes or folders, so move them all elsewhere first). A white folder icon (with reveal triangle control) remains in its place. I haven't found a way to turn a white folder back into a mailbox again. To delete a white folder, you use the Delete Mailbox command (again). As I said, this is completely and utterly nuts. Whoever designed this user interface should be taken out back and shot. In experimenting with this I've somehow ended up with a completely empty white folder with a "1" badge next to it indicating it contains a single unread message. I can't see any such message.
