What is it specifically that you don't like about the one that comes
with XP?

Add/Remove Windows Components - Fax Services - if you haven't seen it.

My local Fry's had a plainpaper fax on sale the other day for very
cheap, I forget the amount, say $10, and I considered replacing my old
heatstylus fax with the plainpaper one.

There are still some offices in the world in which the 'secretary' is
not provided access to envelopes and stamps nor does she get access to a
computer and email, but she has 'fax privileges' and can fax
something -- or can receive a fax 'instantly' but doesn't have any
computer/email capability.

I prefer to send and receive faxes with the computer instead of the
freestanding one, but it still fills a niche sometimes. It can sit
there and monitor a line beside an answering machine more 'capably' and
conveniently than the situation with how a comptuter fax is configured.

Yes, I use it and it works just fine. No need for 3rd party software.
