You really can't tell; my G5 iMac is smack in the middle of the 'dodgy capacitors' range, and I've been expecting it to fail for the past several years. Except that it hasn't. That doesn't mean that those iMacs are reliable, just that this one seems to soldier on. -- Peter

These days, as long as > you're not Zoara, the Apple stuff is really very solid stuff. I'm beginning to wonder whether my decision to "definitely get the new iPhone" has caused all the problems it's having with reception. It certainly seems tailored to trigger exactly the way I hold it... -z- -- email: nettid1 at fastmail dot fm

There are many websites explaining how to replace the broken capacitors on the logic board, here's one of them: http://www.instructables.com/id/Imac-G5-DIY-capacitors-repair/ -- marco

I've a 20" G5 and the graphic cards gine in that too, although it still works there's banding on the display. I could still use it and have done as a webcam 'server'. But a month or so latter and the power supply went. So my G5s in a sorry state. I think the graphics card is part of the mother board> I think my card problem is probably a single memorry chip, but that doesn't mean it's easy to replace. > > The Applestore confirmed the problem, but say that the Imac is now an > official "vintage" model and that they cannot get a replacment > graphics card for it > > Sooooo - a few questions > > How do I find out the precisie graphics card? it should be the same one as when you brought the iMac so the spec should be easy to find but a replacement not so easy. > > Where is a good place to buy one from? I don't think there's is, I was quoted 500 for a replacement mother board. So I've taken the memory, HD, and wireless card out. I might remove the DVD drive too. I assume that the LCD is still OK, other than that the Mac G5s pretty worthless it's to thin to turn into an aquarium. I'm replacing it with a Mac mini, so I'll be using the keyboard amd mouse. > > Is it a home repair, or does it require soldering etc? it'll probably require soldering and that's very difficult with such small components who's legs are likely to be 1.25mm apart or less. > > Many thanks - I want to fix it 'cus I still love it, not have to bin > it! I felt like that, but sometimes the things you love have to be set free. I wonder if I can return it to it's maker (aka Apple) for recycling |
