Are incremental CD-bakups possible? On my old system, I've only just figured out how to backup a tree by:-- mkisofs -R /mnt/p6/usr/lib | cdrecord -v fs=6m speed=2 dev=0,0 - Obviously I'd rather not have small [10% of CD capacity] dir-trees on each CD, so I'd want to serially write several dir-trees to the same CD. Apparently the above instruc... 31 Dec 2009 16:32
linux specifics for unix pro - where to learn from? Hi all, having worked with commercial unixes for the last 8 years, I need to brush up my linux skills. In short: I want to learn about linux specifics like devicemapper multipath, udev, /sys and the like. Not about unix essentials like processes, shell, etc. Which books or online ressources can you recom... 16 Dec 2009 19:05

New game XIX for linux (Version of 1980s game QIX) Hi I've written a version of the 1980s game QIX for linux (and it seems to work on FreeBSD too). Its C++ source and doesn't require any special graphics libraries, just libX11.so and libXext.so which are standard on every distribution. http://www.ogham.demon.co.uk/zips/xix100.tgz ... 14 Dec 2009 05:31
Java Updates in Linux I currently dual-boot Ubuntu 8.04 on one computer (XP) and 9.04 (Vista) on another. I keep the latest JRE on both. It seems that a new update gets pushed out about twice a year. Every time this happens, the result is that Java is unusable in Firefox until I use the command line to unlink the existing symbolic link ... 13 Dec 2009 16:29

HOW2 implement a daemon? I've got a nice system that run 'on top of' linux and which can read/write linux files too. In order to still be able to see the other system's display, instead of switching to linux when I 'run' some simple linux commands I could perhaps eg. 1. write to a 'known special' file: "ls /usr/*" 2. which would, via so... 22 Dec 2009 09:13

loading modules automatically: automating modprobes I know how to load modules using modprobe. But these are lost on a reboot. How does one make this permanant? e.g. for IPMI I usually load: modprobe ipmi_devintf modprobe ipmi_si modprobe ipmi_msghandler How do I make this happen automatically on each reboot? Of course, I can just put it in some shell in... 9 Dec 2009 19:59 |
