I have a laptop that I want to take with me on hols in the
caravan, possibly to France. It has a PCMCIA socket but only USB
1.1

Can anyone recommend the best solution to comms (wi-fi and GSM)
and the best route to it, i.e. a PCMCIA modem or a PCMCIA/USB2
card with a USB modem? I have a Belkin 54g USB stick for wi-fi
and whilst it sees my domestic wi-fi no way can I get it to
connect. Running XP Pro SP2.

Also which SP to use for mail and a little browsing in France,
Belgium, and/or Germany?

TIA

If you can find a way of making USB work, then
EITHER
T-Mobile Pay-per-Day mobile broadband http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/pay-per-day/
or Pay up front http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/pay-up-front/
T-Mobile Euroboosters http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/business/services/using-your-phone-abroad/euroboosters/
OR if you have a 3g capable phone, get a free T-Mobile PAYG SIM
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/free-pay-as-you-go-sim-cards/ and the
the Eurobooster
Hope this helps

Thanks for that.

With those sort of charges I don't think I'll bother - or I'll
see if McD's do free wi-fi over there.

A USB2 modem should drop back to USB1.1 - 12Mbps is more than you'd get from
a 3G network anyway. Of course that doesn't rule out that the manufacturer
never tested USB1.1 properly, but I think you should be OK in that respect.

If you really need data, I'd just buy a French 3G dongle and use that. But
France seems to be one of the places that doesn't really do 3G data in a
sensibly-priced way. Or that's what's implied by some of the threads here:
