From: Woody on 31 Jul 2010 03:32 I have a laptop that I want to take with me on hols in the caravan, possibly to France. It has a PCMCIA socket but only USB 1.1 Can anyone recommend the best solution to comms (wi-fi and GSM) and the best route to it, i.e. a PCMCIA modem or a PCMCIA/USB2 card with a USB modem? I have a Belkin 54g USB stick for wi-fi and whilst it sees my domestic wi-fi no way can I get it to connect. Running XP Pro SP2. Also which SP to use for mail and a little browsing in France, Belgium, and/or Germany? TIA

With those sort of charges I don't think I'll bother - or I'll see if McD's do free wi-fi over there. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com

A USB2 modem should drop back to USB1.1 - 12Mbps is more than you'd get from a 3G network anyway. Of course that doesn't rule out that the manufacturer never tested USB1.1 properly, but I think you should be OK in that respect. If you really need data, I'd just buy a French 3G dongle and use that. But France seems to be one of the places that doesn't really do 3G data in a sensibly-priced way. Or that's what's implied by some of the threads here: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/europe/ Theo
