O2 are the biggest network in Britain but I have never really used them
until I got my O2 world cup promotional SIM a while back to see what the
fuss was about before getting a contract.
Whilst I am very impressed with 2G coverage (best of all the networks around
most of the West Midlands I'd say), I have hesitations about getting a
contract with them:

The contracts seem much more expensive than competitors (except the
Simplicity SIM only which are very good value)
No conference calling unless you get an iPhone tariff or iPhone SIM only
tariff
No text delivery reports
No call barring or automatic clock setting (OK - not that important!)
No facility to get a PDF bill which would make expense claims much easier
And most annoyingly - texts not delivered because the phone is switched off
/ out of coverage take AGES to come through - even when re-registering on
the network.
And on the new tariffs you can't use 4 texts to pay for a picture message or
a roaming SMS, which would have been really handy

Why are all these people using them? Am I missing something here? Hmm...

The average Joe Blogs wants a signal where he works, rests and plays. O2
does this very well. The website is uncluttered and nice to use, the
customer service is good on the whole, and the various rewards schemes they
have make customers think they're getting something back. I believe they
are about to launch a new reward scheme on pay monthly where you can get M&S
vouchers etc. every so often.

They've also heavily pushed their unlimited free O2 to O2 calls on both pay
monthly and PAYG, and I think a lot of people have got friends/family to
switch because of that.

As you say though, the actual network is not the best. Something you didn't
mention is that you cannot have more than 1 number on a pay monthly account,
unless you took them out at the same time. If you want another line it has
to be full credit checked, new account, new direct debit.

Their 3g coverage is utterly awful.

I suppose it all depends on a number of factors, including price,
coverage in areas such as one's home, and customer service. In my
situation, if you exclude the virtual networks like ASDA, O2 is best for
me.

I'm with O2 and find the signal very good where I live, though 3G speeds
not wonderful; still goes into Edge a fair bit. I have found customer
service very good. Prices are ok esp. compared to Voda, though like you
it is disappointing that they have stopped their 4 texts/picture message
- much prefer having that to unlimited texts.

I have an Orange work mobile, and coverage isn't as good in my area - I
don't even get a signal in most areas of my home; plus customer service
is abysmal. In fact, the Orange service seems to have gotten worse
compared to years ago when I had an Orange contract!

Although I think Orange is worst of all networks, having an Orange phone
has one advantage in that one can get cheap cinema tickets on
Wednesdays!

The O2 home broadband is very good, and it helps to have the discount
one gets by having an O2 mobile.

So buy the phone and just pay O2 for service.

Not tried this, but I thought it was in - can certainly handle two calls at
once.

If you send one this normally wakes it up.

Not a problem if they are unlimited though.

Inertia.
Good 2G coverage.
Dual band GSM.
Quite fast on 3G IMO.
Customer service not as bad as it used to be...
Cheap SIM only contract.
