Google has a bit more influence than that. In practice the web advertising market (and therefore
the livelihood of a considerable number of sites on the web) is controlled by Google. And that goes
a bit beyond "some maps and a search engine".

And while we are at it, don't forget email. For some, email is a synonym of gmail.
