Whatever. All I know is, some of my windows do open in column view,
but some consistently open in other views, and Finder refuses to
stop that no matter how many times I tell it to. And the "apply
to all folders" seems to no longer exist.

I do use other views at times, but I almost always go back to column
view before closing. I have specifically verified with some
directories, that I can change to column view, but the next time I open
them, they are in icon view or list view. This started for me with 10.4
and continued in 10.5 and 10.6 The Leopards may have inherited it
somehow from the previous owner, but the 10.4 I installed from DVD
with a disk wipe before.
