From: Nige Danton on 1 Apr 2010 21:01 Mac OSX SL: I have a HP C4280 all-in-one printer that prints fine, but I cannot get it to scan no matter what I try. Using the HP installation disc resulted in a message saying the scanner was not connected. I then downloaded what I believe to be the lastest software from the HP site. When I launch that software (after installing it) the scanner software launches and recognises the scanner, but then just appears to hang while it's trying to do "something". Any tips on what to do to get the scanner working? Many thanks. -- Nige Danton email: swop the obvious for g_m_a_i_l --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: news(a)netfront.net ---

Many thanks. I got a HP C4580 all-in-one a while ago. Had a lot of problems getting it to do anything ... Turned out there were problems with the Apple HP drivers, as opposed to the application software - once new drivers were released by Apple, it worked fine. Might be worth checking for HP drivers on the Apple site? I would add that I have never used HP scanner software on any HP scanner. In my opinion, it is hopeless. I've used VueScan shareware which is both straightforward and allows excellent control over all key input and output parameters. It also includes an excellent OCR capability. Larry

Many thanks. Contact HP by email, asking for advice. I've had serious trouble due to the HP software supplied with my HP printer - and I followed all the latest instructions in the `breaking news' section or whatever it was on the support Web pages for my printer. Latest versions, latest instructions, confirmed for my OS, and so on. On contacting HP, I got told that the instructions I followed were total bollocks, and that I should have done X, Y, Z instead. I pointed out that neither the HP supplied manual, nor the on-disc readmes etc, nor the HP support Web pages for my printer - none of the HP documentation tells the the user that. HP replied, telling me that they had updated the support pages for mhy printer on its Website so it no longer gave people the bad instructions I followed and did provide the instructions HP gave me via email. I checked the truth of this allegation: HP had made NO CHANGES to the information supplied for my printer on its Website. So: HP's instructions on how to set up and use your HP device with your printer are likely to be badly broken, HP doesn't give a damn, and your only hope of finding out the correct method is to contact HP directly. Alternatively: hunt down absolutely everything related to the scanner/printer combo on your HDD and delete all of it. Start out by uninstalling the printer/scanner in the pref pane and then trash actual prefs files, and everything else you can find. Then clear all caches using Onyx. All of 'em (after checking startup disc and repairing permissions) Reboot twice WITHOUT logging on the first time. (voodoo step) Log off, log on, and reboot. (voodoo step) Log on again and get on with things: Re-install yer printer/scanner software - making sure you've got the very latest versions. Set it up. Sacrifice a chicken and pray. (CofE step). (CofE step). > I bought the HP C8180 for a client last year. Very nice picture quality on plain paper. But the scan function has failed at 14 months old! This printer has only be used for colour printing and as been *** VERY*** lightly! It shows only 79 pages printed in those 14 months - even then, the yellow ink cartridge required replacement - maybe there was a lot of yellow in those pictures? I complained to HP citing the Sale Of Goods Act 1979 suggesting that such a failure was clear evidence that the device was not "of merchantable quality". Their reply - I could have a refurbished replacement unit at 180. So I'm never going to buy a printer from HP ever again. The warranty on their ProCurve networking products is much better. The devices are no more reliable than anybody elses, but the lifetime warranty had replaced many devices on a next business day basis - no quibble. If only HP gave the same warranty on their printers! -- Graham J

I've got it working now, although I'm not sure how. I deleted the HP software that I had previously installed and reinstalled it. Now that HP software and Image Capture both see the scanner and scanning works. So, I don't know why it's now working - but it is. Many thanks. -- Nige Danton email: swop the obvious for g_m_a_i_l --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: news(a)netfront.net --- |
