From: Skeleton Man on 25 Jan 2010 23:31 Hi all, I'm experimenting with different heatsinks on my nforce 500 northbridge chip (K9N4 SLI board), and the plastic pushpins have a habit of breaking in the process of removing them. I was wondering if there is somewhere I can get these in bulk instead of relying on the 2 or 3 pins that come with each heatsink? Even better would be the kind that's removable from the top side.. (ie. the pin as an outer and an inner piece.. you remove the inner peice to remove the whole thing.. no pulling the mainboard out) Chris

In this case you don't need a lot. Try googling for "heatsink push pin" [without the quotes] and you can find more than any person will ever need. AFAIK all of the designs are pretty much the same.
From: Skeleton Man on 26 Jan 2010 19:55 I tried that - I found one company in japan that's a possibility. I guess I have to order the pins and the springs as two parts, and check which size I need (they have like 4 different varieties). I didn't see any other results for where to buy pushpins, just a million posts about people in the same boat as me or complaining about pushpins in general. While it won't repair one that is broken, what I find handy to remove them is a plastic ball point pen. I pull the ink tube/head out and the body with a small hole can be pushed down on the tapered point of the push pins, compressing them enough to slide out. > >Even better would be the kind that's removable from the top side.. I have so much surplus computer junk lying around, I may have a few somewhere... just a matter of motivation to find them. You don't necessarily need them though, a suitable length bolt, nut, insulationg washer for the rear of the board and spring will work. These can be found at a well stocked hardware store (probably nylon washer at the hardware store if you lack single ply cardboard and a hole punch to make your own), online, but the spring may take a little hunting... if all else fails and you can find narrow enough bolts w/enough length, the spring out of a ball point pin might work.

Have you tried heatsink makers to see what their name for those pushpins is in their exploded diagrams or instructions? Because it's often much easier to find things when industry terminology is used, no matter how weird it can be. Real Hardware stores and electronic parts supplies carry nylon hardware, including screws and nuts. Would those be suitable? I've found that Google's image search sometimes turns up better hits than their web search does.
