Roger,
I replaced the files, *Ntoskrnl.exe & Ntfs.sys* from the install winxp-pro
cd, which is about 2/3 years old, just copied it to the old folder
(windows\system32) a
nd the new folder instal is (windows2).
I did attempt to try the *R* setting but could not understand the options
presented to me, maybe you could try and explain it for me??

Tks

Charlie

Hi,

If you are referring to the "r" option when booting the CD, that is to load
the Recovery Console, basically a command prompt environment. To replace
files there, use a command line like:

expand X:\I386\ntoskrnl.sy_ %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.sys

Incidentally, ntfs.sys is not in compressed form and would simply be copied.

Rick,

can you tell me how to fix the error message that I got (below) and what
it means?? I copied the files that I needed but when I booted windows,
that's when I got the bsod and the message, do you think that I have any
chance of fixing it?? and if it's impossible, how do I delete the old
windows installation??
Thanks very much for your help,

Charlie

Hi,

Did you add any new hardware and what was the file you replaced? Did you
check that it was the appropriate version for the system? Many files have
been updated since the initial release via service packs, you may have
overwritten the file with an older version.

Hi Rick,

I copied the files that existed on the original winxp-prp cd, I did not
know that it could be an older file, I told you I'm not a tech savy
person!!!??
At this point I would like to simple take out the older winxp
installation, I'm not sure how to do it, can you help?? I was trying to
save it because of all my settings and applications but I'm resigned to
the fact that it is all lost, I do have lots of photos that I would like
to save, is it at all possible to save that installation at this time???

Thankls for your help,

Charlie
