Yep, Yup, Yep, etc. By using a utility and methodically eliminating
much of the services running I am able to get the USB version to read
CDROM's only. But as soon as I insert a DVD the drive disappears.

I'm close to completely giving up on this one...

What did I say about CDs and DVDs? There are two lasers between the two.
Doesn't that give you any clues?

Thanks for your advice, Bill. I appreciate it.

Here's the latest: I borrowed someone else's external DVD/RW USB
device and experienced the same thing. Then tried the same device on
that person's laptop and it worked perfectly. I didn't have the
Samsung device to try at that particular time.

During all my testing the LCD on the HP laptop started doing the
horizontal line/static thing so I think the best answer is to retire
the HP and purchase something new which will have everything new
including an internal DVD/RW.

Thanks again - Bob

Sounds like power issues.

I'm not familiar with the external drives you mention (mine are all
self-assembled from drive and case) but if they draw power from USB,
perhaps your USB ports don't supply enough to run the drive when it's
actually **doing** something.

Did you try going into the CMOS ...the internal configuration at start
up?
Maybe it`s shut off and can be switched on in the drives section.
Just a thought. ...jerry
