No doubt using a VPN when connected to open wi-fi is a good idea, however
the ads in Hotspot Shield (HS) are pretty annoying in my experience. They
sit at the top of the webpage taking up precious real estate on a laptop
screen. There is also the matter of AnchorFree's data mining . It seems to
me there's a conflict of interest present when combining data mining with a
product that's supposed to provide security and protect privacy. I decided
to stop using HS and get a very affordable VPN subscription from Witopia
instead. However, in a pinch I would definitely use Hotspot Shield Vs
nothing at all.
