Anyone use VirtualBox here? How do you get the actual Windows
application window itself to nearly fullscreen on a large monitor
in VirtualBox? Is Windows in Parallels or Fusion similarly
limited or clunky when it comes to window size or can one enjoy
(ahemm!) Windows XP (say) at fullscreen or nearly at or anything
you want like on a real Windows PC?

You need to install Guest Additions and then hit Right-Ctrl + F to set the full-screen mode.

Thanks for this Alfonso, another person also suggested this
elesewhere and I will look into it but for the moment, it seems
(after a tipoff elsewhere), changing the display resolution from
within windows has given me a much as I want for now, it now
fills about three quarters of the 20" monitor!

I like this virtual machine, a bit clunky regarding mouse
capturing from them to the Mac desktop etc but beats starting up
a dedicated winbox...

Under "Machine" (on the Mac menu bar), try checking "Auto Resize Guest
Display" and playing with "Adjust Window Size." I get a nice 20"
wide-screen out of Win XP.

No problem. And for the record, Guest Additions also let you get rid of the mouse capturing issue, along with some other benefits like copying/pasting info between your guest and your host and shared folders.

Alfonso
