If that is the case, then that's what I'll do. I'll check it out and report
back whether the 5.x version of Avast no longer requires a registration
procedure and is still truly freeware.

Thanks for the advice. But, I knew that.

What I was looking for was something a bit more elegant. There MUST be
somewhere in the installation (registry perhaps?) where this information of
the prior email address is stored.

I was hoping someone knew more about Avast than I did. I'm sure someone
does. But, so far, none of us know (including me) how to get the email
address out of Avast!
