I scored a similar entry when my HD had an unreadable sector. In my case, the offending file could be *moved*. So I created a dummy directory, moved the unreadable file to the dummy directory and ran my "updatedb" etc with a parameter that ignored the dummy directory. The only permanent cure (in my case) was to reformat the partition that contained the unreadable sector.
