Actually, mounting a Nikkor DX lens on a D700, or D3, D3x, D3s, should
invoke DX mode, auto cropping the image. No vignette.

A non-Nikkor APS-C lens on any of those FX cameras could very well
produce the vignette.

You can turn off DX crop setting, which I did for a 10.5mm DX fisheye.
It still isn't quite a full circular fisheye. The lens shade needs to be
trimmed back too. Generally not advisable but some lenses will work at
some settings.
