Most of the main things you've asked have been addressed by the others
already. However, I can add that I only use Mac and Linux for work and
find it very nice marriage indeed. You get very nice hardware, an OS
that is very solid and all the unixy goodness thrown in for good measure.

Plus, if you *have* to have MS Office you feel slightly less soiled on
the Mac :) Although, Mac Office is now a very different product to
Windows Office.

There are two or three minor annoyances/preferences that I miss in OS X
relative to Linux (and you raised two of them):

- middle click is not used in the UI, only at the terminal (you need to
get a non-apple mouse for it work too)
- focus follows mouse is not available
- multiple desktops is a bit kludgey when compared to Linux

None of the above are deal-breakers. I'm a very command-line driven user
and I feel very at home on the Mac.

As you say you could dual-boot and Linux works very well on Mac
hardware. In fact the developer of Mepis Linux (debian based) uses a Mac
as his main workstation - it even comes with a Mac installer.

Finally, you don't mention what your main requirements are as this may
give a better idea of what it's going to be used for.

Overall, I'd say go for it, but be prepared that it isn't perfect
(nothing is) and there will be things to re-learn. BTW if you have a way
of being affiliated to a futher/higher education establishment (or know
someone who is) you can get a significant discount on the hardware.

p.s. Magsafe is worth a hellovalot more that a tenner! I've no idea how
many times someone's pulled the cable away while I've been sat on the
sofa. It's one of those 'how did I manage before?' game changers.

p.p.s oh and the multi-touch trackpad is /awesome/.

I agree that's a pretty god idea. Out of interest has anyone copied it
somehow?

Also handy when you throw the Mac off yer lap when it sets fire to
you! ;-)

Cheers, T i m

ps This thread has highlighted a couple of Linux apps that could be
handy.

I've asked that before and the response is that it is probably
patented/trademarked to the hilt.

Saves on heating bills for me.

I doubt it. How often do you intend to rm -rf * (this thread excepted)
in a non-terminal window? I can't say I ever have. Even if you did want
to do this, you'd make bloody-well sure it's in the correct window.

Also, we all have back-ups, don't we?

The only time I did an rm -rf * where I didn't intend to was when I was
in the wrong directory, not the wrong window. I've been using unix/linux
daily for about 10years now.

Oh yeah, BTDT. More than once...
