The volume limit is 512, but the limit for shares (which is what's
relevant in this case) is 64 previous versions. At least in Windows
Server 2003.

> And how do you get previous versions for files that are not being shared?

Volume Shadow Copy requires specific software support to get to previous
versions. Here is an overview of the architecture:

In Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, support for previous versions
directly in the file system is not available to the best of my
knowledge. You need to define a share. (Of course, you can define a
share on the same computer that hosts the actual files.)

In Windows Vista, direct support for previous versions has been added,
no share required.

Hi Subhas:

Thinking about your request and wonder if there may not be a trade off
between the number of prior versions stored in shadow copies and the
frequency of the snapshot.

That is to say, if you prefer the last 64 minutes, you could take a picture
every minute. But if you prefer the last 64 months, you could take one
every month.

This appears to be a trade off between the "go back manchine" time limit, 64
minutes vs 64 months, and is probably a function of how often files are
edited and the propensity of users to want to roll back.

You might, for examle, want to consider taking your snapshots every 2 hours
or every 4 hours, which would give you the same number of roll backs, but
would increase the distance over time to find a useable copy of a file that
a user had changed or deleted in the intrim.
