(Regarding an iMac Intel 17" late 2008 I think)

My home network has several Macs and iPods connected via a Time
Capsule and a couple of AirPorts. I want to install Snow Leopard on
the 17" iMac, but its optical drive has failed. I know the MacBook Air
OS can be installed this way, but how about the iMac? When I reboot
and hold down the A key on the iMac, the AirPort doesn't show up. When
I reboot and hold down the N key, the Network icon blinks but then
goes away.

I don't have any stand-alone optical drives; might there be some
alternatives I haven't thought of? If I can find an ethernet null-
modem cable, can I connect the iMac to another Mac, and have the iMac
access the other optical drive?

Thanks in advance.

If you have a Firewire cable, you should be able to open the iMac hard
drive in target disk mode. Then, you can install SL on it, using the
optical drive of another Mac.

"Target disk," I didn't know about that. I don't have a firewire cable
but maybe that's the cheapest route if I have to buy something.
Thanks.

You think a network install is out of the question? I'd've thought
that's how an IT dept. would do it.

See Nick Naym's post on how to do a network install. I is much more
complete than what I wrote.

on the machine you want to use as Target disk turn on computer or
restart and hold down T or (Command-T) keys. key key(s) held down until
you see a Blue screen with a fancy decorated Y symbol jumping around on
screen.

make sure the Ethernet cables are attached to each computer.
now turn on other Computer.
When started up the as a Hard drive using a icon with the target disk
symbol. (believe the last time I used Target disk it was red. and the
symbol was yellow. ) and it will have the and used for the target disk
computer as the name. you can double click on it to open the finder for
it. if it opens your all set.
you can close it (not dismount it) and do what you was aiming to.
