I have been leaving journaling turned off for ages
on my MacBook Pro, with nothing bad happening.

Is journaling just a placebo?

This questioning is a little like the following question:

"I haven't made a backup for 3 years, with nothing bad happening. Are
backups a placebo?"

Of course the answer is no - you don't need a backup until you need
one (and you _may_ never need one). But since you can't predict when
you need a backup, regular backups are still a good idea.

Journaling is the same kind of thing. The OS uses it for recovery
from system crashes. If you never have a system crash, your computer
probably will derive no benefit from journaling.

Even if you _do_ have a system crash, you may be OK without
journaling, but you might experience data corruption, depending on
what is happening on your machine. (Of course in the event of a
crash, you might have data corruption even with journaling on, but it
is less likely.)

It makes no difference to the chance of something bad happening but if
something bad does happen then you may be better off with journalling
enabled. So no, it is not "just a placebo" any more than wearing a
seatbelt or crash helmet.

And Mr. Conrad has shown us all the hazards of not wearing a crash
helmet.
