Indeed, I used to have a blackberry pearl and when I was in certain
parts of the city it was VERY sensetive to how I held it. I used to have
to hold it with only two fingers to get it to keep connected. It was
common knowledge and no one made a fuss.

In part I think that's true. But, there is also a percentage of people
who are willing them to fail. I tried to think of an analogy but
couldn't - except for a friend of mine; her husband refuses to shop at
John Lewis or Waitrose as he perceives them as elitist. Mind you, he
also liked Vista...
